The Model of Models (MoM) may save thousands of lives from flooding disasters through predictive flood detection.
NASA has developed a tool called the "Model of Models" (MoM) in partnership with numerous scientific institutions to improve flood detection and provide global flood risk updates. This tool combines data from open-source hydrological models with satellite data to provide early warning information about floods at the sub-watershed level, which allows communities to take action to protect themselves. For example, NASA has partnered with the Pacific Disaster Center (PDC) to integrate MoM into their disaster alert platform, Disaster AWARE, which sends notifications to affected communities when a high likelihood of flooding is detected. Local authorities can use this information to activate emergency response plans, evacuate people, or deploy response teams and humanitarian aid. The Model of Models aims to address the lack of hazard early warning systems in many countries, especially developing countries that are vulnerable to disasters and climate change, by providing information that can save lives.
